You may be eligible for a payment from the State of Vermont’s Transitional Housing Program (also known as the “Motel Housing Program”) for the return of some, or all, of your security deposit.

Last year, the Attorney General’s Office became aware of concerns from Vermonters who had been temporarily housed at motels and had their security deposits withheld in whole, or in part, when they moved out. These security deposits were paid to the motels on your behalf by the Vermont Department of Children and Families (DCF) to protect against damage or provide a payment at time of move out.

A settlement has been reached with the owner of the motels, and the following have been identified as having occupied a room at one of the motels: Cortina Inn (Rutland); EconoLodge (Montpelier); Hilltop Inn (Berlin); Pine Tree Lodge (Rutland), and Quality Inn (Brattleboro).

You may be eligible for a portion (or in some cases up to the full amount) of your security deposit. File a claim online or complete the paper claim form you would have received and return it to the address:

VT Transitional Housing
Settlement Administrator - 8519
P.O. Box 2599
Faribault, MN 55021-9599

If you do not make a claim within 60 days, you will not lose your refund. It will be transferred in your name to the Unclaimed Property Division of the Office of the Vermont Treasurer (www.vermonttreasurer.gov/content/unclaimed-property) and you may claim it there.
